Uses include but are not limited to treads and risers, straight and cove bases, pavers, countertops, architectural signs, ornamental elements, and benches.
The History of Precast Terrazzo Enterprises
Although the history of Precast Terrazzo Enterprises, Inc begins under the current ownership in 1996, the history of the operation itself is much longer and harkens from the early days of the terrazzo industry in the central NC area. It was started around 1954 in Raleigh when a local company, United Terrazzo, started manufacturing precast terrazzo units in their Raleigh, NC warehouse. They found that precast terrazzo was a time saving, convenient method of making stairs, wall panels and wall base, both straight and cove, rather than the labor intensive and time-consuming process of pouring and finishing those items in place.
Rather than setting up molds on the jobsite, pouring the terrazzo, and grinding in place, they could walk on the jobsite with a finished product. Installing the finished precast was quick and simple without the associated backbreaking work of grinding, grouting, polishing, and sealing, on their hands and knees, not to mention the mess on the jobsite associated with those processes. Even when labor was cheap as far back as the 1950’s it made sense. Today it is exceedingly smart business.
The operation grew and became United Precast and was moved to an area called Bayleaf, north of Raleigh proper by one of the remaining partners of United Terrazzo. That site currently rests at the bottom of Falls Lake, a beautiful boating and recreation area with hundreds of miles of shoreline north of Raleigh, NC.
United was bought by Robert Roberson of David Allen Company in 1975 and moved into Raleigh before the lake was established. It was operated successfully for many years as Roberson Precast LTD until it moved into its current home just east of Raleigh in the early 1980s, conveniently located within a few miles of the I-40 and I-95 corridors. It operated there until the current owners, Keith and Christy (Roberson) Oliver acquired the operation, changing the name to Precast Terrazzo Enterprises, and have been the stewards of the company ever since.
Precast Terrazzo Enterprises, Inc. has subsequently become the largest and most successful precast terrazzo manufacturer in the Southeast. We are continually expanding our capabilities through research, innovation, and the addition of new equipment designed to our specifications, to allow us to serve the terrazzo industry and make precast terrazzo the preferred choice for stairways, wall bases, countertops, and panels. This has allowed us to evolve with the industry and supply quality precast terrazzo to an ever-expanding market that realizes what the founders did in the 1950’s: precast terrazzo makes sense for convenience as well as economics.
